This thesis examines the challenges, specifically in regard to tactical C2 in austere conditions, to the Enhanced MAGTF Operations (EMO) concepts being developed by theMarine Corps. EMO hinges on the ability of company landing teams (CLTs) to deploy from a seabase, conduct over-the-horizon insertion, and retain the data-driven C2 inherent in modern military operations, specifically with regard to warfighting functions of intelligence and supporting fires. This thesis leverages the capabilities...

The high-concentration farming practices that allow the United States to be a world leader in agriculture also present a vulnerability to biological pathogens, particularly foot and mouth disease (FMD). The purpose of this thesis is to stimulate and broaden the discussion of the U.S. livestock industry’s susceptibility to an FMD outbreak,...

Feminitives in Contemporary Slovene Music This article focuses on the use of feminine forms derived from masculine nouns in contemporary Slovene music. Feminine nouns denoting persons were extracted from selected song lyrics and analysed in terms of their word formation. Based on the analysis of feminine forms derived from masculine nouns it is suggested that in music women are often sexualised – their overall image implies sexuality and is clearly based on male fantasies, linguistic reality...

This study extends Safir's (1987) analysis of Noun Phrase (NP) Predication. It argues that, for NPs to function predicationally, they must satisfy not only Safir's Predicate Principle, but also the Predicate Condition (a condition which requires NP predicates to be fully saturated.) Tutelo is a Siouan language that was once spoken in Virginia and the Carolinas. Before it died out, a few scholars collected enough data on the language to elicit the main features and characteristics of the language. This paper looks at the noun in Tutelo. Specific focus is on the shape of the root, the marking of gender and number, the expression of possession, the process of making a noun into a verb, and the place of the noun within the sentence. Analysis of the cofunctional relationship between common nouns and adjectives in English is examined in terms of the principle of semantic copredication. It is proposed that a formalized semantic metalanguage system can be constructed to demonstrate that some English adjectives behave like common nouns. Numerous examples are provided throughout the paper. (MSE)

A comprehensive analysis of English "as" clauses in terms of distribution and interpretation is offered. It is hypothesized that "as" clauses provide a supplementary explanation to the head noun (adnominal "as" clauses) and provide the propositional content of the main clauses (sentential "as" clauses.) "As" clauses, whether they seem to function as adnominal or sentential, should be regarded as adverbial clauses. (Contains 19 references.) (JP)
